The announcement follows a previous commitment to acquire 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets, bringing Ethiopian Airlines’ total fuel-efficient Boeing order book to 20 aircraft, reinforcing the carrier’s position as Africa’s leading airline.

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the purchase of nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with deliveries planned between 2031 and 2033, in a move aimed at expanding the airline’s route network and enhancing international connectivity.

The announcement follows a previous commitment to acquire 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets, bringing Ethiopian Airlines’ total fuel-efficient Boeing order book to 20 aircraft, reinforcing the carrier’s position as Africa’s leading airline.

The new order will provide more flexible flight options for passengers while continuing the airline’s strategy to strengthen its fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said the purchase demonstrates the airline’s commitment to sustainable aviation and improving customer service.

“We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to further expand our existing fleet,” Tasew said. “This order underscores our continued commitment to enhancing our fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service. We will continue to acquire more aircraft and adopt the latest technologies as part of our strategic vision to advance sustainable aviation.”

Ethiopian Airlines operates Africa’s largest 787 Dreamliner fleet, including both 787-8 and 787-9 jets, flying intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to high-demand destinations across Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as key intra-African routes.

The airline’s latest order is expected to further boost its international operations, providing more capacity and flexibility to meet growing demand.

Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, said the Dreamliner family has been transformative for airlines globally.

“The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game-changer for airlines around the world, and we are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in their mission to connect Africa with the global community. Together, we look forward to shaping the future of air travel with advanced, efficient, and comfortable airplanes to serve their passengers,” he said.

The confirmed order with Boeing raises Ethiopian Airlines’ total Boeing 787-9 aircraft on order to 20, alongside previously committed Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The airline also holds options and purchase rights for additional Boeing 737 MAX and Boeing 777X aircraft, reflecting a broader strategy to modernize its fleet and expand global reach.

The latest deal highlights the airline’s focus on efficiency, passenger comfort, and strategic growth as it strengthens its position as Africa’s largest and most connected carrier.
